IPA Student wins Hawaiian Humane Society Contest

For the second year in a row, Mark York (’17), is a winner in the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Pause4Paws Service Learning Contest.  Mark’s entry “Chompers Guide to Exercise” is the winner in the High School Division Video portion of the contest.  The annual competition asks young people to identify and offer solutions to an issue or problem animals may face in their community. Contestants enter in either the Middle School or High School division and choose a medium: video, a written essay, or slideshow presentation. In 2014 as a freshman, Mark’s winning video featured Chompers’ debut and gave tips and advice on how to be a good pet owner.

“Pets have such a positive influence in a family,” remarks Bonnie Oda, Education Partnerships Manager of the Hawaiian Humane Society.  Oda also pointed out that, “Studies have shown that children that grow up with a pet tend to develop responsibility skills, learn compassion, and are able to form more meaningful relationships with others. These critical character skills carry over into adulthood.”

Mark received a $150 prize, a congratulatory plaque for the school and a scholarship he can use at the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Summer Teen Program.  His winning video is featured on the homepage of the Hawaiian Humane Society website.
