A Benefit Gala for Island Pacific Academy

A Benefit Gala

Ua Ao Hawaiʻi

The annual Benefit Gala at Island Pacific Academy illuminates one of our most critical areas of need: student scholarships. Our unwavering mission is to celebrate individuality, empower our students, and inspire future success in a place where values matter.

Last year, thanks to the remarkable generosity of our supporters, we raised an astonishing $200,000. These funds shined brightly and lit the way for an additional 152 scholarships awarded to families facing financial constraints, opening doors to educational opportunities that might have otherwise remained in the shadows.

Your contributions are not just donations; they nurture and equip our students to become guiding lights in professions that might not even exist today and illuminate the path to solutions for challenges we are yet to encounter. Together, we are forging a generation of "Navigators of Change," poised to excel in an ever-evolving world.

In a dazzling display of community spirit, Island Pacific Academy’s spectacular fundraising gala, Ua Ao Hawaiʻi, lived up to its theme of “Brightness Approaches,” raising more than $150,000 for student programs. The event, held on November 11, 2023 at the Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina, not only lit up the night but also illuminated the incredible generosity and kindness that reside within our community.

The Onaga family

The Onaga Family

Generosity of Spirit Award
When their first child, Kaila, was born, Sharnell and Clifton Onaga were determined to provide her with the best education possible as they were not highly educated themselves. Sharnell’s income went for Kaila’s schooling, while Clifton managed daily expenses. Two years after IPA opened, they enrolled Kaila in Grade 6, finding a school whose values aligned with theirs. Rachel, their second daughter, arrived a few years later, and a couple years later, Sarah. Tragically, Sharnell was diagnosed with cancer and passed away just four months after Sarah’s birth. Having seen IPA’s impact on Kaila and honoring his wife’s commitment, Clifton promised to continue providing the best education for all three daughters. Rachel and Sarah started at IPA in junior kindergarten, and Kaila graduated in 2012. In 2022, the girls faced another devastating loss with their father’s sudden passing. Rachel had just turned 18 and Sarah was only 15. Kaila and her new husband Colin took guardianship while Rachel and Sarah showed incredible resilience during this devastating time. Rachel graduated from IPA in 2023 and is a biology major at UH Manoa. Aided by a generous scholarship from IPA, Sarah is continuing her IPA education surrounded by lifelong friends and dedicated teachers who offer unwavering support. She will graduate from IPA in 2025.

The Elevations

Vintage Soul Band

The Elevations

Vintage noun vin·tage \ ˈvin-tij \
Of high quality and lasting value, or showing the best and most typical characteristics of a particular type of thing, especially from the past. — Cambridge Dictionary

“We are a 9 piece vintage soul band, doing it in the original style before Motown. It was at the cusp of original R&B from the 50’s mixed with the Jazz and Gospel that Soul music was born. That’s the era that we are focusing on — the origin, the source. To me, it’s a more driving sound, more raw, more gritty, so real and honest. I guarantee that most people have never heard of Bettye Lavette, Jean Wells, Ricky Allen, Freddie Scott, et al. But, we are also looking to modern bands that play in that style (Vintage Soul) as well like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Lee Fields and The Expressions, Saunn & Starr…. These bands provide the bridge from the original artists to the modern day. It is from here that we hope to make a difference, by making our own original music to share with the rest of the world.”  – Eric, The Elevations Hawai’i
