On Monday, November 3, 2025, our Secondary students in our Digital Media Arts visited the PBS Hawaiʻi Studio for an in-depth learning trip. The visit gave students a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the complexity of broadcast media. They toured the entire facility, seeing the technical and creative work that goes into producing a show, from the sound control room and production floor to the content creation and communications departments.
To reinforce their learning, students participated in a hands-on activity where they practiced creating a short sequence. They experimented with different camera shots, including close-ups, medium shots, over-the-shoulder views, and bird’s-eye perspectives, to understand how camera angles fundamentally change the audience’s perception of simple actions like walking down a hallway or performing a handshake.
Connecting to the Hiki Nō Program
This studio experience sets the stage for next semester, when the class officially begins participation in the Hiki Nō Program. Students will produce compelling stories about topics relevant to their lives and communities, developing essential skills in critical thinking, collaboration, media production, and creative problem-solving.
Student Host Spotlight
We are especially proud of students Jaylin-Epyphany Castillo and Kekoa Dung, who served as student hosts for HIKI NŌ. During their time at the studio, they received professional hair and makeup before confidently reading from a teleprompter to introduce various segments. Jaylin’s episode aired on November 18 on PBS Hawaiʻi, and Kekoa’s episode aired on December 5 on PBS Hawaiʻi.
Watch the episodes:
• Jaylin-Epyphany Castillo – PBS Hawai’i Hiki Nō – Nov 18
• Kekoa Dung – PBS Hawai’i Hiki Nō – Dec 2
From the classroom to a statewide broadcast, this experience highlights how our Digital Media Arts program prepares students to step confidently into real-world media environments.
