Japanese Martial Art Kendo at IPA

Island Pacific Academy students were treated to a demonstration of the modern Japanese martial art,  Kendo (the way of the sword).  Kim’s Kendo Academy brought some instructors and students to demonstrate the art and equipment which includes the shinai (bamboo sword) and protective armor to protect specified target areas on the body, arms and head.

According to Hyun Kim, the instructor at the academy, practicing Kendo promotes respect and discipline, concentration, stress relief, health and self-defense.

Kendo demo 3Kendo practitioners use a bamboo sword, the shinai,  and armor to protect specified target areas on the body, arms and head.

The presentation included an explanation of the armor, techniques and rules for competition, followed by a demonstration of the various striking and thrusting techniques.  Finally, the students were invited to try out some of the techniques.
