Math Honor Society: Mu Alpha Theta Inducts New Members for 2015

Island Pacific Academy’s math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta, welcomed one dozen new members during its annual induction ceremony on Tuesday evening, October 20.  Mu Alpha Theta recognizes scholastic achievement and works to foster interest among students in the subject of mathematics.   At IPA, juniors and seniors are considered for membership based on their math grades and teacher recommendations.  “We look at the student’s math grades from the previous year and also their first quarter grades from the current year,” explains Secondary math division chair, Patrick Tangonan, who advises the IPA chapter.

“Our Mu Alpha Theta members perform community service with a math slant,” says Tangonan.  “Their favorite service so far is to tutor elementary students in math.  They really enjoy giving back and the tutoring service is a great way to bring students from both divisions together.”

Current and new members of Mu Alpha Theta enjoyed a pot luck supper with their very proud parents after the ceremony.

Mu Alpha Theta was first organized at the University of Oklahoma in 1957.  Students in high school grades (and those attending a two-year college) can seek membership at local chapters around the world. Now approaching its 60th anniversary, Mu Alpha Theta boasts well over 100,000 members and has chapters in 2,200 schools in nearly two dozen countries including the United States.  Learn more about Mu Alpha Theta here and the college scholarships available for chapter members.
