Spirits of Saturn
Danielle Okimoto
Mixed media (acrylic and collage on canvas), 20 x 16 in., 2 pieces

This piece explores the Elizabethan era not as a “Golden Age,” but as a period where beauty standards masked systemic struggles. By centering on figures like Queen Elizabeth I, the work unravels the dark truths behind 16th-century English culture. The gold leaf is a metaphor for this idea of romanticized history by physically masking the suffering of women. It personifies the “Spirits of Saturn” cosmetic: a lead-based cosmetic that promised the ideal paleness while internally poisoning the wearer. Ultimately, the piece challenges our modern perception of culture by revealing how cosmetics often serve as a mask to hide imperfections.
