Navigator Robotics Wins VEX Online Challenges

On Friday, March 3, 2017, the winners of the REC Foundation’s Online Challenges—an international competition—were announced. All three of the entries by Navigator Robotics at ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY won awards, which totaled $600 in VEX Robotics parts and equipment.

Brian Lu (’19) and Jonah Bobilin (’17) entered the VEX Robotics Photography Challenge with photos entitled “Tournament Teamwork” and “Friendship”, respectively. Both photos were among the ten joint winners of the competition, each winning $50.

“I took this photograph of our school’s elementary VEX IQ team at a competition,” explained Brian Lu (’19) in his photo entry, “Tournament Teamwork”. “The image shows all of the team members working together at the pit to fix up and program their robot. I feel that this photo represents the collaboration and teamwork skills that robotics programs foster.”

"Friendship" by Jonah Bobilin ('17).

In his photo entry, “Friendship”, Jonah Bobilin (’17) wrote, “Robotics does not only benefit students intellectually, equally important are the relationships that form as a result of collaboration. My photograph of these two teammates highlights the human component of robotics—which is too often overlooked—and reminds us of the friendships that are forged through robotics.”

All of the winning entries in the Robotics Photography Challenge can be viewed on the REC Foundation website.

The team also entered a video via the Navigator Robotics YouTube channel to the REC Foundation STEM Educational Video Online Challenge. The video, entitled Gears and Gear Ratios, received second place in the competition, winning $500. The video covers how gears ratios are used in robotics and the mathematics for them.
