On December 20, ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY concluded our Navigators Nourish community food drive with a food distribution day that turned weeks of generosity into direct support for families across West Oʻahu.
This season, IPA came together as a school ʻohana to respond to increased food insecurity caused by the recent government shutdown and reductions in SNAP benefits. These changes placed added strain on many local households. Our community responded with compassion, care, and action.
A Community-Wide Effort
From November 24 through December 16, IPA families, students, faculty, and staff donated staple food items that were assembled into standardized grocery bags. Collection bins across campus quickly filled. Donations were accepted in the Elementary foyer, Main Office, and morning carline.
Thanks to this collective effort, the IPA community assembled 200 grocery bags filled with essential food items. All bags were prepared for distribution before winter break.
Student Leadership in Action
Students in the Grade 5 Student Action Committee led the initiative and worked alongside faculty and staff to sort, organize, and pack donations for families in the West Oʻahu community. IPA’s Head of School, Gerald Teramae, also joined students during the packaging process, reinforcing the message that service is a responsibility shared by all.
Community Partnerships That Made a Difference
Community partnerships played an important role in expanding the reach of Navigators Nourish. Aloun Farms generously donated 200 pounds of fresh eggplant, adding nutritious produce to each bag. Moss & Associates partnered with IPA by organizing food collection efforts within their organization. These contributions helped ensure each family received a balanced set of staple items.
Living Our Mission and Values
More than a food drive, Navigators Nourish was a living expression of IPA’s mission, vision, and core values, particularly the Power of Human Kindness, Generosity of Spirit, and Commitment to Excellence through service. It offered students an authentic opportunity to put learning into action and reminded our community of a simple truth we strive to live by, “Whenever you can, help!”
The impact of Navigators Nourish extended beyond campus, with coverage on KHON and KFVE and in MidWeek West Oʻahu Voice, highlighting how students, schools, and community partners can come together to address real needs.
Mahalo to our students, families, faculty, staff, and partners for their unity, service, and generosity. Together, we made a meaningful difference.
