Gallery Night Showcases Student Art

IPA’s Secondary building was transformed into an art gallery on Saturday for Gallery Night, a fundraiser for the school’s art program.  Guests were treated to a sumptuous display of crudités, crackers and a variety of cheeses, sushi, dessert treats and more.  Displays of artwork by students, grades Kindergarten through 12, were installed along the walls of all three floors to be viewed by guests as they savored their wine, enjoyed live piano music and admired the many pieces of art created by our talented students.  “We wanted to bring the community together, celebrate the wonderful artwork our students have created and to talk story,” explained Yvette Anseeuw, Fundraising Events Coordinator.

On the lanai, Warren Andrade, IPA’s ceramics teacher, introduced guests to the art of raku firing.  “I loved the raku firing.  It’s such an interesting process and it was fun to make my own pot!” expressed Jeanne Arakawa, a parent who attended the event.  Available for purchase were square pots created by students and various other styles of pots created by Mr. Andrade.  Guests could choose a pot and “paint” or glaze it using several different colors.  Then Andrade would fire each pot in a kiln, the temperature for which is between 1400 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit!

Rounding out the evening was a silent auction of art projects completed by each elementary class and each secondary grade.  There was a chime made of sea shells,  a Waikiki skyline filled with colored fingerprints, a watercolor collage, and origami art, just to name a few of the items up for auction.  The guests enjoyed the friendly competition as they tried to outbid each other to win their child’s classroom art!  Proceeds from the event will benefit the art department here at IPA.
