Last Friday, March 22, 2024, marked a significant milestone for Island Pacific Academy. The school proudly inaugurated its own chapter of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS). In a special ceremony, nineteen students who have excelled in scientific pursuits were inducted into the newly established chapter.
Establishing an IPA chapter of the SNHS was a student-initiated endeavor spearheaded by IPA Grade 11 student, Conner Koyano, with assistance from William Meyermman ‘26, at the start of the school year.
“When I asked them why, they both commented that they are always looking to do more in science and this would be a way for them to do more with people who actually like science for science, not because it’s part of a class,” shared Secondary science teacher, Aparna Cheerath, who serves as the faculty advisor. “I agreed. Science is a journey of discovery and can be really fun when done with that intention.”
The SNHS recognizes and celebrates students who have demonstrated exceptional aptitude and achievement in scientific pursuits. The society acknowledges individual accomplishments, and also fosters a culture of academic excellence. It inspires students to strive for success in their scientific endeavors, and builds a community where members collaborate, share ideas, and engage in scientific discussions. SNHS chapters enhance science education through guest lectures, scientific workshops, and community outreach programs while promoting leadership and service through various projects.
Koyano has already demonstrated his leadership skills in setting up the IPA chapter.
“Connor took on a lot of the work, including presenting the idea to upper Administration, helping with preparing the documents that needed to be submitted, and organizing the inductions,” shared Cheerath. “He did all this while taking multiple AP level classes and maintaining good grades throughout the year. Connor has shown real dedication toward his and the school’s future and best interests. I am truly proud of him.”
Families, teachers, and fellow students gathered to witness the induction of the 19 exceptional individuals. Each inductee took a solemn pledge to uphold the principles of the society and to continue their pursuit of scientific excellence with integrity and dedication. The inductees were presented with certificates of membership, symbolizing their commitment to the ideals of the SNHS.
Membership in the society is a prestigious honor that provides recognition, networking opportunities, and avenues for community service. The formation of this chapter signifies IPA’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence and fostering a passion for scientific inquiry among its students. SNHS at IPA holds great promise for fostering a vibrant scientific community within the school, and members will have many opportunities to further their passion for science and make a positive impact on the world around them.
As they embark on this new chapter in their academic lives, these students carry with them the torch of scientific inquiry and a commitment to excellence that will undoubtedly shape their futures and inspire generations to come.
