By all accounts, ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY’s Secondary Spring Music Recital on Saturday, April 16 was a huge success. Held at the KROC Center Performing Arts Auditorium in Kapolei to a full house of family and friends, IPA’s students, grades 6-12, put on an impressive display of vocal talent and instrumental performances, all under the leadership and tutelage of Micah Hirokawa, Secondary Music Teacher.
“I am so proud of the accomplishments of our music department,” commented Gerald Teramae, Head of School, who attended the performance. In under two years, Hirokawa has developed a music program that includes choral and instrumental instruction, in addition to a music club. This year’s spring recital debuted the Middle School Ukulele Ensemble, Beginning Stage Band and IPA Honors Band. There were choral performances by grades 6, 7 and 8 as well as encore presentations of several numbers from IPA’s Spring Musical.
“It was truly marvelous to see so many of our students showcase their vocal and musical talents,” beamed Sabine Yamamura, parent of Maddie (’18) and Ashton (’20), both of whom performed in the recital. “Just when we all think that we know our kids, they bust out the saxophone, ukulele or trombone . . .” she continued. “I can’t wait until next year!”
Mark Button, IPA Board trustee and parent to Jack (’16) and Hannah (’18) was also thrilled by the evening’s performances. “We are so grateful to have Micah teaching our kids. He encourages their passion for music and performing.” Hirokawa says he is really appreciative of all the support and shared that plans are already in the making for IPA’s 2nd Annual Secondary Spring Music Recital. “I am sure that it will be another incredible night showcasing the musical stylings of our talented students,” he added.
