Letters for Presidents’ Day

Presidents’ Day is Monday, February 15, 2016.  The school is closed and there are no classes in honor of the holiday.

Students in Patricia DelaCruz’s grade 2 class just finished learning how to write a proper letter.  They each wrote a letter to President Obama sending greetings and asking him how he and his family spent the holiday. The letters were mailed to the White House and the eager students are hoping to receive a formal reply.

Letters to  the President from ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY grade 2 students in honor of Presidents’ Day.

The observance of the holiday was established in 1885 as a tribute to George Washington, America’s first president.  In 1971 the holiday was moved from February 22 (Washington’s actual birthday) to the third Monday of February to create a three-day weekend as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.  The holiday is now seen as a way to honor all United States Presidents.

Enjoy the three-day weekend.  Learn more about Presidents’ Day here.
