Scholastic Book Fair Encourages Reading

Island Pacific Academy’s annual Scholastic Book Fair, every fall in November, encourages reading and a love for books.  At this year’s monster-themed book fair, 1045 books were purchased by students, parents, grandparents, and friends of the school.

Elementary Principal, Steve Ross, was very excited about this year’s big book number. “Reading for just a few minutes a day is so important to learning,” says Ross. “It’s wonderful to see the students so excited to search for a book that they are truly inspired to read.”

The fall Scholastic Book Fair theme this year was Monsters.

Every Scholastic Book Fair also supports IPA. The fairs allow teachers from all grades to shop in the Scholastic catalog for teaching materials or other educational tools using Scholastic Dollars, can raise funds for specific school projects, and is also an opportunity to help another organization through the “All for Books” campaign.  This year, IPA’s Book Fair supported the Kapolei Library with funds donated at the register for new books.

2015 Scholastic Book Fair last day
On the final day of the Book Fair parent volunteers running the check-out area in the Elementary Lobby were very busy helping grandparents, visiting for Na Kupuna Day, as they enjoyed shopped along with their grandchildren.

Volunteer Coordinator, Emily Brown, praises the work of dozens of parents before, during, and after the Book Fair. “The Book Fair is a volunteer-driven event.  We are so lucky to have many dedicated parents who volunteered their time to decorate, set-up, man the registers, tidy the shelves, tabulate contests, and keep the fair running for the eight-day stretch,” says Brown.  “We are one of the bigger fairs on Oahu and we absolutely couldn’t do it without these parents. They make the fair fun for not only their own children but the entire IPA community.”
