Mahalo Golfers! 2015 IPA Golf Tournament A Success

Mahalo to the many golfers and generous sponsors of the 9th Annual IPA Golf Tournament.  Proving that Friday the 13th can be a lucky day, over 100 golfers enjoyed the day at Ewa Beach Golf Club on November 13, 2015.  “This was our second year in a row having the tournament at Ewa Beach,” says Gerald Teramae, Head of School.  “It’s a great course and facility. Everyone who comes out to be in our tournament raves about the set-up and our great prizes.  We really thank all of our sponsors and donors who make our tournament the success that it is each year.”

IPA Fundraising Event Coordinator, Yvette Anseeuw, is pleased with the tournament success and grateful for the help of dozens of parent volunteers who help to plan and run the tournament. “We added a fun novelty of being able to get lucky drawing tickets the length of your arm span.  Tall golfers were really popular with the other golfers who borrowed their long arm spans to get their strip of tickets,” Anseeuw shared.  “The addition of a putting contest, silent auction, and live entertainers also helped to add a lot of excitement to this year’s event,” says Anseeuw.

Golfers check-in at the IPA Golf Tournament
Golfers could purchase lucky drawing tickets as long as their arm span as they received their swag bags at tournament check-in.

Anseeuw credits a hard-working golf committee who volunteer their time to spread the word about the tournament, bring in prizes, and find new donors and sponsors. “We are so lucky to have a strong golf committee with many parents and friends who are also golfers,” says Anseeuw.  The 2015 IPA Golf Tournament raised over $22,000 to supplement IPA’s Athletics budget.

One of the unique aspects of the IPA Golf Tournament is how teams are selected for prizes.  Bernadette Axelrod, Director of Advancement, explains why it’s not necessarily the top 3 teams who win. “Several years ago we decided to honor IPA’s opening day of September 13, 2004, in the way we give out our team awards.  Along with the traditional low-net and high-net team prizes, we also give prizes to the teams who come in 4th, 9th, and 13th place,” says Axelrod.  “This year was our 9th annual tournament so the 9th place team actually got a great prize.”

“Another thing that golfers love about our tournament is how quickly we move things along,” says Anseeew.  “As soon as the golfers begin play at the shotgun start, we start pulling lucky numbers. When golfers finish their 18-holes and come back to the banquet room, we’re ready to hand out prizes.  That along with a 2-putt max and a bogey max really keeps play moving right along,” Anseeuw says.

Popular duo Ben and Maila provide entertainment during the dinner and awards banquet at IPA’s 9th Annual Golf Tournament.

Na Hoku Hanohano award winners Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson were the evening’s entertainers. “Ben and Maila were a wonderful addition,” says Anseeuw.  “We were thrilled to have them at our tournament; Ben set up their gear and then played on a threesome!  The majority of our golfers stayed all the way to the very end of the awards banquet to enjoy their performance.”
