VEX IQ Robotics: IB Design Process Helps IPA Win

Island Pacific Academy’s Navigator Robotics teams keep bringing home awards; at a recent VEX IQ competition, judges cited the International Baccalaureate (IB) Design Process as the winning edge our young team used to earn the Build Award.

“Our newest team members and a ‘veteran’…all sixth graders by the way…had a well-built robot,” says Weyland Bailey, IPA Robotics and Technology Design instructor.  “The judges at the aio North Shore VEX IQ Qualifying tournament said it was the team’s well-organized engineering design book which followed the IB Design Process that pushed our team to the top,” explains Bailey.

Zaheer Gulko, William Angel, and Madison Mizon (all Grade 6 students) pose with other winning participants at the aio North Shore VEX IQ Qualifying tournament held on November 14, 2015.

The Build Award is presented to a team that has built a well-crafted and constructed robot.  According to the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, key criteria that the judges look for in determining a Build Award winner include:

  • Robot construction is of high quality; robust, clean, and effective use of materials
  • Robot efficiently uses mechanical and electronic components
  • Robot is designed with a clear dedication to safety and attention to detail
  • Robot demonstrates reliability on the field and holds up under competition conditions
  • Students understand and explain how they worked together to develop their robot

IPA had two robots and two teams at the November 14 competition held at Waialua High and Intermediate School. “All of our team members were excellent representatives of our school and competed well during the matches,” says Bailey.
