Students Mix Art and Technology at 2015 SOTF Conference

Two Island Pacific Academy teachers and their students attended the recent 2015 SOTF Conference (Schools of The Future) at the Hawaii Convention Center: Weyland Bailey, Robotics and Design Technology teacher, took VEX Robotics student team members and demonstrated their robot while Boz Schurr, Digital Art and Theatre Design teacher, oversaw a student trio who combined art and technology to create a time-lapse video.

Students work on the mural project in an IPA art classroom in preparation for the Schools of The Future convention. A Canon camera was used to record images to create the time-lapse video.

For Schurr, this was her first conference as a participant instead of attendee. “The project turned out so well. I don’t think things could have gone any smoother and our students did an amazing job,” she says.

At the Hawaii Convention Center, work continued on the mural catching the attention of attendees.

The title of the project that Schurr took on the road was “It’s Not About the Destination, It’s the Journey” and integrated physical art and technology.  “Our girls demonstrated the creation of an on-sight mural, which we recorded and sped up creating a time-lapse video.  The video helped our students and viewers of both the art in-progress and the end product time-lapse video see first-hand how a process itself becomes a journey,” says Schurr.

IPA students Rylyne Bravo (’19), Jessica Sato (’16) and Elizabeth Lyons-Best (’18) answered the questions of SOTF attendees. Their finished mural is in the background on the easel.

Attendees at the SOTF conference could ask questions and talk with our students and Schurr. “Our project let people see how learning accelerates and is internalized when your school community isn’t focused just on the grades,” explained Schurr.

About Schools of The Future (SOTF):

The annual Schools of the Future Conference is the largest professional development gathering of public and private K-12 educators in Hawaii and brings together teachers and administrators from Hawaii’s public, private, charter and parochial schools as they focus on how to best transform our existing schools and create new learning environments for the 21st Century.

This collaborative event is presented by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) and the Hawaii Community Foundation in partnership with the Pillars of Peace Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and the Hawaii Society for Technology in Education to highlight the best practices that are taking place in our learning environments today and being planned for those of tomorrow.
