VEX Robotics Team Wows Judges in Kona

Island Pacific Academy’s Navigator Robotics VEX high school team (4442X) won the Excellence in Engineering Design Award at the Hawaii Island TMT VEX Tournament at Kealakehe High School in Kona on the Big Island this weekend; this award also wins them a berth in the 2016 Hawaiian Electric Companies Hawaii State High School VEX Championship in January.

VEX team members Colton Okimoto (‘18) and Brian Lu (‘18), who are also in the robotics Design Technology class, used their knowledge of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Design Cycle Process to document their project.  The sophomores’ attention to detail and organization at every stage of the project really “wowed the judges” according to Robotics and Design Technology teacher, Weyland Bailey. “The comments shared by the judges were that our team’s engineering notebook showed thorough research of existing products, impressive mechanical drawings which were shared with fellow students and adults in order to receive feedback, and consistent daily journaling for every step of their construction process.”
