Winning Weekend for Navigator Athletics

Island Pacific Academy student athletes competed individually and as teams in three different sports this past Saturday, September 5, all with outstanding performances. Congratulations to our IPA Navigator teams and coaches.

Cross Country
Navigator cross country runners competed in the first Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) meet of the season at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama campus on Saturday.

Hats off to our intermediate runners Kailer Suerth (’21) and Ashton Yamamura (’20) who, despite the grueling hills at Kamehameha, were both able to shave a bit of time off their 2-mile finishes compared to their times at the Iolani 2-mile Challenge of August 29.  Seventh grader Breana Higa-Alexander made her cross country debut in the 2-mile at Kamehameha which she completed.

Junior varsity harriers were all “pumped for the meet” including Frank Condello III (’18) who clocked in with a time of 22:30.61 in the boys 3-mile for a seventh place finish.  Fellow sophomores Carley Matsumoto, Jaymee Weisberg, and Madison Yamamura all ran in the girls 3-mile, their first experience with the distance in competition.

Sporter Air Riflery
IPA junior varsity and varsity shooters were on target this weekend in their match against Kamehameha held at the Saint Francis range.

Varsity boys out-shot Kamehameha with a team score of 1015 to 967.  Navigator varsity girls beat Kamehameha 1006 to 926 and the junior varsity boys won their match as well 868 to 822.

Team scores are compiled from the top 4 of 6 shooters. “Having a team score in excess of 1000 points means all 4 of the scoring shooters are getting their aim tight around or right in the bulls-eye,” says head air riflery coach Mike Axelrod.

Volleyball: Intermediate Girls
IPA’s girls intermediate volleyball team won both games of their double header at Damien Memorial School.

In the first set of matches against Damien, Navigator girls dominated play turning in scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-6.  With no signs of slowing down, the girls followed up with a second set of games in the second match against St. Andrew’s Priory with scores that were nearly double their opponents in each game 25-11, 25-12, 25-13.

Our intermediate girls volleyball team competes in Division III.
