Summer Enrichment – Spotlight on STEM

Summer is the perfect time for students to learn a new skill, focus on a talent, or get an introduction of the grade ahead.  Each summer Island Pacific Academy offers a variety of classes in a Summer Enrichment Program.  Class size is limited to ensure students get the most out of their summer experience.

A new addition to our summer STEM education program is a class called Pinball to Pac Man.  This innovative and fun class for grades 4-6 investigates the evolution of video games with many hands-on projects.  Students also learn and incorporate several Hawaiian values: akamai – intellect, paʻahana – work hard, laulima – work together, and hoʻo kela – striving to do oneʻs best.

Students in Pinball to Pan Man acquire new skills like soldering as they learn what goes into the design and production of a video game.

Pinball to Pac Man brings together the old and the new.  Students build simple games and by the end of the three week class will have built their own video game system.

In Math Foundations students in grades 6-8 strengthen their pre-algebra and algebra skills. Relationships of the four basic operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are reviewed, with further emphasis on fractions, decimals, place value and percents.

Students begin class everyday by writing and sharing their thoughts. One day students were asked to write a diamante poem about any two math related ideas, either comparing or contrasting them. A diamante poem is written in the shape of a diamond.
