IPA Student at Local TEDxYouth Conference

“I’m dependent…not independent and I want to share with you why.” That was John Black’s (‘15) opening line for his TED talk at a TEDxYouth conference held at Punahou.

Black shared with the audience that as he approached graduation day and leaving for college, he eagerly anticipated becoming an independent person. He came to the realization, however, that it is the relationships people have with those around them that make life meaningful and enriching.  People depend on one another.

“We watched a lot of TED talks in our Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class my senior year,” says Black.  “I like public speaking, so when the opportunity came up for me to give a TED talk myself I was very interested.”

“My talk about dependence tied into the theme of the the TEDxYouth Conference I was a part of which was sustainability of ourselves,” explains Black. “The idea I shared was that as humans we really aren’t independent. The farther in life we go, the more dependent and connected we become with others.”

The purpose of a TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talk is to present a good idea, then foster discussion about the idea among people all over the world by sharing the talk in-person, online, and through videos.  By sharing ideas from people from all walks of life, the ultimate goal of TED talks is to encourage people to help better themselves and our world. The x after TED indicates that the conference was independently organized.
