Fall Theatre Production: Pinocchio & A Thousand Cranes

Next month, Island Pacific Academy drama students will present two short plays for the 2015 fall theatre production: Pinocchio and A Thousand Cranes. In addition to three performances on the multi-purpose room stage at IPA, the students will also take the show on the road and give a traveling performance at Kapolei’s Ho’okele Elementary School.

“Our Pinocchio is being done as a ‘commedia dell’arte’,” explains Art Department Chair and Theatre teacher Brandi Dul. “Commedia dell’arte is a form of comedy theatre that originated in Italy during the 1500s. In this type of production, the actors wear masks as part of their characters,” Dul explains. For IPA’s version, each actor’s latex mask is being handmade by a student using an elaborate process.

A Thousand Cranes is the story of a young girl named Sadako who was a toddler living with her family in the city of Hiroshima, Japan, when the atomic bomb was dropped during World War II.  Sadako was diagnosed with leukemia about a decade later and began folding origami paper cranes while in the hospital.  According to a Japanese legend, if someone can fold 1,000 cranes they are granted a wish.
