Island Pacific Academy had two robotics teams competing last weekend (October 24) at the Engineering Council, College of Engineering, VEX Challenge held at University of Hawaii at Manoa; team 4442X brought home the Engineering Design Award. Colton Okimoto (’18), team 4442X captain, attributes this win to his understanding and application of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Design Process learned in his Design Technology class.

The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation presents robotics competitions for all age groups. In each level, VEX IQ or VEX, students are given an engineering challenge in the form of an exciting game. Using parts from the VEX Robotics Design system, teams of students build robots to perform actions that will score points during timed matches.

VEX Robotics teams can have both middle and high school grade members (ages 11-18). This year’s VEX challenge is called “Nothing But Net.” Watch a video to learn about how the challenge is scored here.
VEX IQ team members can be in elementary and middle school grades. The VEX IQ challenge for 2015-2016 is called “Bank Shot.” All five of IPA’s VEX IQ teams have qualified for the State Championships which will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center in February.
